Hello, my name is Leamen Ho, im 19 years old and im about to start uni at uni of gloucestershire, my problem is that since a young age i have always know i was to be a designer but i was always confused about what sort of design to do... i would LOVE to go into fashion and my dream would me to have my own brand selling in the high street... obviously the more famous the brand the better but ive set in my mind that tht will never happen for me, and i would be happy with jus a brand that is fairly well known in a high street... ie selling my brand in a well know high steet show, for example topshop. But for my degree i chose graphic design, my reason was tht i know the graphics industry is easier to get into than fashion and also i know i am good at using computers and photoshop, but as time is getting nearer and nearer to the start of my degree im starting to get really upset about the fact i didnt try harder when i had the chance to study fashion (my art and design foundation course) so now i have no experience in fashion design, sewing, or pattern cutting but my dream is still to have my own brand in the high street.... i was thinking of doing this graphics degree and in my spare time i wud research about fashion, about designers and how they made it to the top...

i have spoken to a few people about this, mainly my boyfriend and he knows quite a bit about business and not that he doesnt believe in me but he has given me alot of heads up about how hard it would be to reach a very high standard in fashion... which i sadly agree with... ive done some research on some brands and to have reaslised that most the top companies was established many years ago when there was a gap in the market... i havent been able to find any new comers that has been highly successful...

am i being silly and naive about my dream? im getting quite confused about what to do... do uthink i should study some short fashion course in my spare time? or do u think any companies will take me for an internship without any fashsion experience?

also, i jus wanted to know some stuff about starting a fashion business? when i design a garment... do i have to actuallu design the pattern on the fabric? or is it perfectly legal for me to buy a fabric and create a garment out of tht fabric? and IF i was to make batches who would i have to contact?

i apologise about the longgg query i sent you! but im so confused with what to do... it doesnt help tht my parents r quite strict and if i was to tell them tht i think i chose the wrong path they would not be please :(

Hi Leamen, it's great to have a dream. First of all, you have to focus on your dream. For example, who is your favorite designer? You try to look on the web and find his/her photo with his/her company/store. Then print it and tape it into your room wall. So, whenever you wake up, you always think positive and chasing your dream come true.

You have to underline who is your target market. And keep learning about fashion industry. If you already have a basic of design such as photo shop that's great, so you can design it by your self. For pattern, it's easy. Just buy one sample that you like, then you just give it to the pattern vendor. Just like that. If the pattern still not good, the vendor have to make a correction until it is perfect.
Fashion business is great and always changing. You have to search and learn about your market. The pattern vendor, embroiderry and also printing are many located in Indonesia especially Bandung.

You have to make some investment doing this business. Well, i will tell you about my experience. My first investment is about 500 USD to running a clothing line. So you have to ready with a fact. And you have to always learning about the fashion up-date and learning about the designers biography. Then you can analyze all the stories to create some new idea of fashion.

Hope my answers will make you satisfied and motivated. Remember, always think positive and believe that your dream will come true. All of it is coming from our mind. "What you believe is what you get!"

Hi i asked a question on yahoo and you sent me your site. I have a question about fashion. Ive always been a curvy girl growing up through middle school and high school and i always wore the same thing. T-shirts and Jeans. With an occasional Hoodie along with converse. Now that im in college and older i would like to wear more up to date fashionable clothing. But since i'm curvy i know there are things i cant wear but i don't know what they are. I wear around a size 9-10 jeans and i wear l or xl shirts because of my breast. Please Help!?!?!

Hi Meredith... :) You have to be proud of your breast size and be more confident with your self. And my advice is: you have to show to the whole world that you're hot!! And if you bored with your style, some girlie style will look good on you. But you have to say bye bye with your old converse style, and say welcome to the 'girlie flat' shoe. Jeans is still good to wear in many occassions. It is simple and casual. My tips is: you have to choose some apparel that simple, and v-neck t-shirt will look great on you. Ok... i have collected some good stuff for your reference. Maybe, it will help you.

how do you get started with the fashion business

i am a inspiring fashion designer. i have a lot of good stuff that i just came up with like a logo, name, and clothes. but instead of working with top designer's who already made it big [channel, Marc Jacobs,etc.] i want to become just like that,and I'm only 16.so please help me with understanding on how to get started...

First of all, i would like to explain that doing business in fashion is not that easy. You have to build your creativity and imagination.
But, if you already have a mission that's awesome :D
This is the steps:
1. You have to think the name of label.
2. You have to find references as many as you can by internet, by site seeing at the mall, and etc.
3. What classification of the label. Is it for men, women, or both.
4. The target market? Is it for teenage, workers, mature, or etc.
5. You have to make a design.
6. You have to print the price tag (bar code) and label.
7. Make a production of clothing.
8. Find the location of the store.
9. Promotion.
10. You have to up-date the model. At least 3 months before you make another production.
11. Focus of what you do.
12. Analyze the product which is sold out or not. And find out why??

My best friend's 18th is coming up soon and she is having a purple theme party.
She wants all of us to dress up in purple.
I'm not sure what I should wear? I was thinking maybe a purple dress but I think that might be too formal.
